Big Park Murray Greys- Founded 1995
Big Park Murray Grey Stud was founded in 1995, with the purchase of seedstock from local and mainland studs. We purchased and moved to a larger property in August 2002. We have participated in the local show circuit obtaining many ribbons and broad ribbons. We have sold females and bulls intra-state and interstate, and have received favourable responses from our many purchasers.
Earlier this year we purchased Onward Sam, Junior Champion Bull at the Murray Grey National Show and Sale at Wodonga in April, 2008. Sam is described as a bold headed young bull with a great combination of muscle, structure, temperament, athleticism and constitution. To add to our sire battery we travelled to Wallawong Murray Greys in Mullaley, NSW in July and purchased Wallawong Quench. Quench is a tall bull displaying above average carcass characteristics and is structurally sound. His 600 day Wt EBV is in the top 20% & EMA is in the top 1%. Despite the dry seasonal conditions we still maintain confidence in Murray Greys and the breeding program we have in place.
Top price at Island State Multi Vendor Sale on 5th May, 2008 at Powranna was $6,000 for nine year old cow, Big Park Valere U24, with heifer calf at foot. Big Park Valere U24 went to Alan Pate from Mount View Murray Grey Stud in Victoria. The top bull price of $4,000 went to Big Park Benetton, which went to the Talbot family's Glen Iris stud. The second top priced bull was Big Park Beneteau which sold for $3,500 to the King Island Surprise Bay Pastoral Company. Five joined heifers from Big Park sold to a top of $2,100 to Woodbourn Murray Grey Stud, Cressy and averaged $1,060.
The last of the Dial Park stud herd was also offered for sale by the Applebee family, unjoined heifer Dial Park Betsy was one of the stud's two top price females, selling for $1,500 to the Big Park stud. "Roberts stud stock manager Tim Woodham said this week's sales clearly showed Murray Greys were "definitely not a dying breed." Mr Woodham said interstate buyers were attracted to the sales for the chance to source genetics from Tasmania."
