Big Park Standardbreds - Founded 2006

Big Park Standardbred Stud will be available to supply Artificial Insemination services for standardbred mares in the 2008/9 breeding season. The decision has been brought about by the untimely passing of our good friend, Leigh Plunkett and the closure of Berriedale Stud at Westbury. Big Park will have two qualified AI technicians, with Gail and daughter Sheryn Fenton both having passed the AI and Stallion Handling Course at Glenormistion College, Terang, Victoria. Sheryn had previously worked for the past three breeding seasons at Berriedale Stud with Leigh, and will therefore bring valuable experience to the operation. Breeders will have access to chilled semen from the best stallions available in Australia and New Zealand.

Big Park are proud to stand former star juvenile US pacer JR Mint this coming season. JR Mint won 17 of his first 20 starts as a two and three year old in the USA and Canada and was the winner of the elimination and Final of the $500,000 Hoosier Cup. JR Mint by Northern Luck out of a Jate Lobell mare - Kisses N Candy, one of the hottest maternal family lines in the world today.

We have bred and raced for our own pleasure many horses over the past 20 years. Since June 2006 we have purchased 5 mares; Superior Stature, Highview Goldie NZ, Minerva Reef NZ, Windeena and, Milady Veronica to increase our breeding barn to 7 mares, with El Jays Angel and El Jays Belle; with the purpose of breeding to sell yearlings.

We have purchased from the 2008 APG Melbourne Yearling Sale a well bred filly by Western Terror out of Poetry, with the intention of adding her to our breeding barn. We believe Western Terror will become an outstanding brood mare sire. We visited Alabar NZ in November and inspected all the stallions, with Western Terror being a stand out in conformation and his racing history is fantastic.

The 4 outstanding colt yearlings we sold at the Yearling Sale at Inveresk on 19th January, 2008 averaged $9,500. The Brioso Hanover - El Jays Angel colt sold for $15,000; the Pacific Fella - Superior Stature colt sold for $8,000, the Life Sign - Minerva Reef NZ colt sold for $9,000 and the Exotic Earl - Highview Goldie NZ colt sold for $4,000. The filly by Modern Art out of Windeena failed to sell and has since been leased.

2007 foals have been weaned and handled and are looking promising: filly = El Jays Belle by Artesian, colt = Minerva Reef NZ by Life Sign, colt = El Jays Angel by Western Terror, filly = Superior Stature by Time Stands Still, colt = Milady Veronica by Peruvian Hanover.

Our matings for this years foalings are; El Jays Belle and Superior Stature to JR Mint, Windeena to Western Terror, Highview Goldie NZ to Artiscape, El Jays Angel and Milady Veronica to Life Sign and we have given dear old Minerva Reef NZ a year off
